Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among humor styles, depression and self-management in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The sample consisted of 205 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who attended community health center in Daegeon and Gyeonggi-do.
Methods: The data were collected from 26th of April in 2012 to 11th of May in 2012. The structured questionnaires were humor styles scale developed by Martin, Puhlik-Doris, Larsen, Gray and Weir(2003), depression scale developed by Beck(1967), self-management scale developed by Toobert, Hampson and Glasgow(2000). The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson`s correlation using SPSS WIN 18.0 Program.
Results: The results of the study were as follows. The highest reported score of the self-management domains was diet while the lowest was blood sugar testing in this study. Self-management was differed significantly depending on diabetic education. There were significant negative correlations between depression and self-enhancing humor(r=-.263, p=.023), between depression and affiliative humor(r=-.274, p=.014), between depression and aggressive humor(r=-.240, p=.042), between self-management and self-defeating humor(r=-.274, p=.028) and between self-management and depression (r=-.625, p=.002). There were significant positive correlations between depression and self- defeating humor(r=.260, p=.012), between self- management and self-enhancing humor(r=.250, p=.037), between self-management and affiliative humor(r=.260, p=.020), between self-management and aggressive humor(r=.216, p=.048).
Conclusion: The humor styles and depression have correlations with self-management. Therefore, it is necessary to develop nursing interventions to increase the level of self-enhancing humor, affiliative humor and decrease the level of depression and increase the level of self-management for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
